1. The role of galectin-1 in type 2 diabetes. Clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Aim: The purpose of this thesis was to identify a new agent in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and assess its clinical potential in the context of type 2 diabetes. Study I: Through a combination of microdialysis and mass-spectrometry, we found increased galectin-1 levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue in a small experimental study of 15 men with and without type 2 diabetes. 2. Systems Biology of Type 2 Diabetes in Skeletal Muscle
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous and complex disease that currently affects more than 350 million people worldwide. A wide range of risk factors influence the pathogenesis of T2D, including genetic and epigenetic components, as well as controllable factors such as diet, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle. LÄS MER
3. Leptin and the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolism, and Adipose Tissue
Sammanfattning : According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and it is the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk factors for CVD are divided into two major classes: non-modifiable (age, gender, family history) and modifiable (including tobacco use, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, dyslipidemia, and stress). 4. The collagen fibrillar network: Sequential degradation of its constituents by tissue metalloproteinases
Sammanfattning : The cartilage matrix is made up of a fibrillar meshwork comprising type II collagen and other associated proteins. One main function of this network is to retain the large aggregating proteoglycan, aggrecan, a vital component in the regulation of fluid flux in cartilage. LÄS MER
5. Lipid Metabolism and Insulin Signalling in Adipocytes : enhanced autophagy in type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Energy storage in the adipose tissue, to an extent leading to obesity, is associated with local as well assystemic insulin resistance. When insulin-producing beta-cells in the pancreas gradually fail tocompensate, plasma levels of glucose rise and overt type 2 diabetes is diagnosed. LÄS MER
