1. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests
Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 2. Rooting for forest resilience : Implications of climate and land-use change on the tropical rainforests
Sammanfattning : Tropical rainforests in the Amazon and Congo River basins and their climate are mutually dependent. Evaporation from these forests help regulate the regional and global water cycle. Furthermore, these rainforests themselves depend on precipitation to sustain their structure and functions. LÄS MER
3. Natural Resource Use Conflict: Gold mining in tropical rainforest in Ghana
Sammanfattning : Extraction of gold in many tropical countries is done in rainforests that provide non-timber forest benefit flows. Our model is the first attempt at modelling this conflict in a developing country in the tropics where capital for mining is from foreign direct investment (FDI). LÄS MER
4. Buying Conservation : Financial Incentives for Tropical Forest Conservation in the Ecuadorian Amazon
Sammanfattning : Market-based instruments have become a widely used approach to motivate landowners to conserve forests instead of clearing them. However, such market-based instruments are increasingly criticized for their simplistic view on complex environmental, social and economic issues; for their ethical stance; and for creating exchange value for essential ecosystems services, which potentially perpetuates a flawed economic system. 5. Aspects of regeneration in tropical secondary forests of Northeast Borneo affected by selective logging, El Niño-induced drought and fire
Sammanfattning : A large proportion of the world´s tropical rainforests are today secondary forests, a term encompassing forests in various degrees of degeneration. For the main traits of old-growth forests´ structures, species composition and ecosystem functions to recover, regeneration of non-pioneer tree species is essential. LÄS MER
