1. Making travel sustainable with ICT? : The social practice of travel planning and travel information use in everyday life
Sammanfattning : Adopting the perspective of the traveller, this thesis examines how travel plans are actually made in the everyday situation and how information is used and drawn on when planning the many, often unremarkable, trips of ordinary urban life. Ethnographical field studies in southern Stockholm, Sweden, employing a practice theory perspective showed that people use a vast mixture of different types of information when planning and making trips. Sammanfattning : The increase in population, accompanied by an increase in the availability of travel opportunities have kindled the interest in understanding how people make use of the space around them and their opportunities. Understanding the travel behaviour of individuals and groups is difficult because of two main factors: the travel behaviour's wide coverage, which encompasses different research areas, all of which model different aspects of travel behaviour, and the difficulty of obtaining travel diaries from large groups of respondents, which is imperative for analysing travel behaviour and patterns. Sammanfattning : Great optimism has for some time framed the potential effects that access to ICT-mediated travel information services (ICTIS) have on travellers. Little has however been known about real-life long-term effects of access to ICTIS. The aim of this thesis was thus to create a basis for understanding the role of ICTIS in urban transport of people.
