1. Building the Bridge from Bench to Bedside: Ethical Issues in Translational Stem Cell Research
Sammanfattning : Abstract in UndeterminedTranslational stem cell research raises many interesting ethical questions, which have, to a greater or lesser degree, been debated at an international as well as at an interdisciplinary level. Nevertheless, there is still no international consensus regarding how a number of ethical questions related to this research should be answered. LÄS MER
2. Cell and gene therapy for blood disorders. Modeling of novel treatment strategies for Gaucher type 1 disease and Diamond-Blackfan anemia in mice
Sammanfattning : Gaucher disease type 1 (GD type 1) and Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) are rare genetic disorders affecting the hematopoietic system and routinely treated by administration of drugs with variable clinical efficacy. Though effective in alleviating disease symptoms in large cohorts of patients, these treatment options have the major drawback of being non-curative. LÄS MER
3. Clinical Findings and Outcome after Stroke. Including a Translational Stem Cell Therapy Perspective
Sammanfattning : Background and Purpose: Stroke is one of the dominant causes of death and adult disability in the world. There is a need for novel therapeutic approaches to improve functional recovery and outcome after stroke, and experimental studies have shown that stem cell-based therapies (SCT) hold much potential in this regard. 4. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system
Sammanfattning : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. 5. Human iPSC-derived neuronal networks. Development and application for compound evaluation
Sammanfattning : Research on human brain development and function in health and disease has been hampered by limited access to primary human tissue and limited translatability of animal studies. This knowledge gap is encouraging the use of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neural in vitro models. LÄS MER
