  1. 1. Magnetic solotronics near the surface of a semiconductor and a topological insulator

    Författare :Mohammad Reza Mahani; C.M. Canali; Biplab Sanyal; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic solotronics; Transition metal dopants; Dilute magnetism in semiconductors and topological insulators; Atomistic tight-binding models; DFT; Spin dynamics; Magnetic anisotropy; Scanning tunneling microscope.; Condensed Matter Physics; Kondenserade materians fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Technology where a solitary dopant acts as the active component of an opto-electronic device is an emerging  field known as solotronics, and bears the promise to revolutionize the way in which information is stored, processed and transmitted. Magnetic doped semiconductors and in particular (Ga, Mn)As, the archetype of dilute magnetic semiconductors, and topological insulators (TIs), a new phase of quantum matter with unconventional characteristics, are two classes of quantum materials that have the potential to advance spin-electronics technology. Författare :Alexander Edström; Jan Rusz; Olle Eriksson; Patrick Bruno; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetism; Magnetic anisotropy; DFT; Permanent magnets; Electron vortex beams; Electron microscopy; Electron scattering; Multislice methods; Magnetism; magnetisk anisotropi; permanentmagneter; täthetsfunktionalteori; elektronmikroskopi; elektronvirvelstrålar; elektronspridningsteori; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two selected topics in magnetism are studied using theoretical modelling and computational methods. The first of these is the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of transition metal based magnets. In particular, ways of finding 3d transition metal based materials with large MAE are considered. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Adding utility to carbon materials: introducing dopants using highly soluble metal salts and functionalizing surfaces via bromomethylation

    Författare :Samuel Joseph Fretz; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carbon; Doping; Surface functionalization; Li-S batteries; Fuel cell;

    Sammanfattning : Carbon-based materials have received intense research interest over the past few decades due to their outstanding combination of properties including porosity, non-toxicity, chemical inertness, low density, and electrical conductivity, which has allowed them to find a wide array of applications including supercapacitors, batteries, CO2 capture, fuel cells and catalysis. To expand their utility, a variety of techniques have been developed to enhance their reactivity and functionality. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Gilbert damping of doped permalloy from first principles calculations

    Författare :Fan Pan; Lars Bergqvist; Peter Svedlindh; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gilbert damping; DFT; Permalloy; SPR-KKR; Spin stiffness; Fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The dynamic process of how fast a spintronic device can be switched from one state to another is characterized by the Gilbert damping parameter. It has been found that the Gilbert damping along with other intrinsic properties in permalloy, can be tuned by different dopants and doping concentration. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Heterogeneous electrocatalysis is the usage of solid materials to decrease the amount of energy needed to produce chemicals using electricity. It is of core importance for modern life, as it enables production of chemicals, such as chlorine gas and sodium chlorate, needed for e.g. materials and pharmaceuticals production. LÄS MER
