1. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden
Sammanfattning : The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages. 2. On Modeling the Dynamics of Fixed Biofilm Reactors. With focus on nitrifying trickling filters
Sammanfattning : Fixed biofilms, which are matrix-enclosed populations of organisms attached to solid surfaces, are increasingly used in environmental biotechnology processes, such as the treatment of potable water and wastewater. This thesis aims to give some insight into the dynamic modeling of biofilms and fixed biofilm reactors, with a focus on nitrifying trickling filters (NTFs) for the treatment of wastewater. LÄS MER
3. Holocene Climate in Central and Southern Sweden : Quantitative Reconstructions from Fossil Data
Sammanfattning : In quantitative palaeoecology modern species-environmental relationships can be statistically modelled, and recent development has made the calibration models more statistically robust. These models are used to transform fossil assemblages to quantitative estimates of past environmental conditions. LÄS MER
4. Efficient Methods for Direct Volume Rendering of Large Data Sets
Sammanfattning : Direct Volume Rendering (DVR) is a technique for creating images directly from a representation of a function defined over a three-dimensional domain. The technique has many application fields, such as scientific visualization and medical imaging. LÄS MER
5. Palaeoenvironmental changes in the northern boreal zone of Finland: local versus regional drivers
Sammanfattning : Multiple proxies derived from the Lake Loitsana sediment sequence (NE Finland) are employed to determine the timing of deglaciation, characterise an early Holocene proglacial lake stage and reconstruct Holocene lake development. Local-scale processes causing shifts in biological assemblages are identified and the most likely Holocene mean July air temperature (Tjul) development is assessed. LÄS MER
