  1. 1. Adseverin – An Immune-Specific Target of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin

    Författare :Camilla Svensson; Lars Wärngård; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; 2; 3; 7; 8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin; TCDD; adseverin; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; immunotoxicity; thymus; cytoskeleton; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) induces thymus atrophy and immunosuppression in all animal species examined and these effects constitute a potential risk to humans. TCDD can via binding to the intracellular aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), modulate transcription of a number of genes and the aim of this thesis has been to identify such genes, which may explain the mechanisms behind TCDD-mediated immunotoxicity. 2. 2. Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing Using In vitro Approaches

    Författare :Helena Högberg; Anna Price; Barbara Cannon; Kevin Crofton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; toxikologi; Toxicology;

    Sammanfattning : There is a great concern about children’s health as the developing brain in foetuses and children is much more vulnerable to injury caused by different classes of chemicals than the adult brain. This vulnerability is partly due to the fact that the adult brain is well protected against chemicals by the blood brain barrier (BBB) and children have increased absorption rates and diminished ability to detoxify many exogenous compounds, in comparison to that of adults. 3. 3. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity

    Författare :Anna Östergren; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Anne-Lie Svensson; Hans Tjälve; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; β-carboline; neuromelanin; norharman; harman; parkinsonism; Parkinson s disease; motoric impairment; behaviour; glia cells; substantia nigra; dopamine melanin; PC12 cells; ER stress; grp78; hsp90; cytochrome P450; CYP1A1; CYP1B1; blood-brain interfaces; 7; 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; endothelial cell; smooth muscle cell; bioactivation; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Mechanisms behind Cadmium-Induced Teratogenicity

    Författare :Estíbaliz López Fernández de Villaverde; Lennart Dencker; Ulf Eriksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Cadmium; Teratogenesis; Exencephaly; Mechanisms; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Heavy metals polluting our environment cause concern for developing organisms. Among them, cadmium with extremely slow elimination from the body, causes lower birth weight in humans but has not been classify as a human teratogen. Studies in different laboratory animals have shown that cadmium indeed is a potent teratogen. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Formation and metabolism of the tryptophan-derived 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole - a light-induced Ah-receptor ligand

    Författare :Linda Bergander; Ulf Rannug; Agneta Rannug; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand dependent transcription factor ubiquitously expressed in mammalian cells. It is a genetically ancient protein mostly known for binding the extremely toxic contaminant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). LÄS MER
