  1. 1. Social Phobia. From Epidemiology to Brain Function

    Författare :Tomas Furmark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Anxiety; brain; epidemiology; fear; neuroimaging; neurotransmitters; positron emission tomography; prevalence; serotonin; social phobia; subtypes; treatment; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Social phobia is a disabling anxiety disorder characterized by an excessive fear of negative evaluation in social situations. The present thesis explored the epidemiology and neurobiology of the disorder. By means of a mailed questionnaire, the point prevalence of social phobia in the Swedish general population was estimated at 15.6%. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Mind really does matter : The Neurobiology of Placebo-induced Anxiety Relief in Social Anxiety Disorder

    Författare :Vanda Faria; Tomas Furmark; Mats Fredrikson; Predrag Petrovic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Placebo effect; anxiolysis; SAD; PET; TPH2 G-703T polymorphism; SSRIs; amygdala subregions; prefrontal cortex.; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The placebo effect, a beneficial effect attributable to a treatment containing no specific properties for the condition being treated, has been demonstrated in a variety of medical conditions. This thesis includes four studies aimed at increasing our knowledge on the neurobiology of placebo. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Imaging Anxiety : Neurochemistry in Anxiety Disorders Assessed by Positron Emission Tomography

    Författare :Andreas Frick; Mats Fredrikson; Tomas Furmark; David J Nutt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Fear; Brain; Serotonin; Neurokinin; Substance P; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder (SAD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common and disabling conditions. Largely based on animal and pharmacological studies, both the serotonergic and substance P/neurokinin-1 (SP/NK1) systems have been implicated in their underlying pathology. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Closing the Gap : How an Adaptive Behavioral Based Program on a Tablet Can Help Low Performing Children Catch Up in Math: a Randomized Placebo Controlled Study

    Författare :Martin Hassler Hallstedt; Ata Ghaderi; Tomas Furmark; Nancy Jordan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; intervention; mathematics; tablet; fluency; short and long-term effects; educational technology; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Early mathematic skills have a substantial impact on later school achievement. Children with poor school achievement are at risk for adverse consequences later in life. Math competencies also have consequences for the economy at large because societies are becoming increasingly dependent on skill sets including mathematics. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Imaging serotonin and dopamine transporters in social anxiety disorder : Characterization, treatment and expectancy effects

    Författare :Olof Hjorth; Tomas Furmark; Andreas Frick; Eduard Maron; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; PET; serotonin; dopamine; placebo; SSRI; CBT; MRI; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychiatry; Psykiatri; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The monoamines serotonin and dopamine are likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of social anxiety and other affective disorders, but their respective contributions and putative interactions in the causes and cures of these disorders are still not well understood. It is also largely unknown if and how expectations of treatment success affect brain neurochemistry and neural activations, and if expectations interact with antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
