11. Laninar-turbulent boundary layer transition influenced by free stream turbulence
Sammanfattning : Laminar-turbulent transition in a flat plate boundary layerhas been considered, with a special emphasis on the influencefrom free stream turbulence (FST)First, experiments on linear stability ofTollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves in a Blasius boundary layer wasstudied. This is a well-known example from hydrodynamicstability theory, which has hitherto suffered from unresolveddiscrepancies between experiments and linear theory. LÄS MER
12. Feedback control and modal structures in transitional shear flows
Sammanfattning : Two types of shear flows are investigated in this thesis; numerical simulations are performed for the analysis and control of the perturbation arising in a boundary layer over a flat plate, whereas PIV measurements are analysed for the investigation of a confined turbulent jet. Modal structures of the flows are identified: the aim is to understand the flow phenomena and to identify reduced-order models for the feedback control design. LÄS MER
13. Topology optimization of transitional flows
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with the application of topology optimization in thedesign of structures that control fluids. A framework is developed in the high-order Spectral Element Method (SEM) code Nek5000, extending Nek5000 fromits original capabilities, performing Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), toperforming density-based topology optimization. 14. Stability and transition on wind turbine blades
Sammanfattning : Transition on wind turbine blades is a highly complex phenomenon due to the myriad effects influencing the process. This thesis studies some of them, namely free-stream turbulence (FST), rotation, and three-dimensionality. The investigations employ large eddy simulations (LES) with and without (implicit or wall-resolved LES) a subgrid-scale model. LÄS MER
15. Stability and transition in the suction boundary layer and other shear flows
Sammanfattning : Bypass transition has been studied by theoretical and numerical procedures, with the asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL) in focus. As reference cases the Blasius boundary layer (BBL) and a free shear flow have been studied. In order to reduce energy losses associated with flow systems, it is a wish to avoid turbulence in these flows. LÄS MER
