6. Extreme points of the Vandermonde determinant in numerical approximation, random matrix theory and financial mathematics
Sammanfattning : This thesis discusses the extreme points of the Vandermonde determinant on various surfaces, their applications in numerical approximation, random matrix theory and financial mathematics. Some mathematical models that employ these extreme points such as curve fitting, data smoothing, experimental design, electrostatics, risk control in finance and method for finding the extreme points on certain surfaces are demonstrated. 7. Nelson-type Limits for α-Stable Lévy Processes
Sammanfattning : Brownian motion has met growing interest in mathematics, physics and particularly in finance since it was introduced in the beginning of the twentieth century. Stochastic processes generalizing Brownian motion have influenced many research fields theoretically and practically. LÄS MER
8. Permanence of age-structured populations in a spatio-temporal variable environment
Sammanfattning : It is widely recognized that various biotic and abiotic factors cause changes in the size of a population and its age distribution. Population structure, intra-specific competition, temporal variability and spatial heterogeneity are identified as the most important factors that, alone or in combination, influence population dynamics. 9. Weld Pool Simulations
Sammanfattning : This investigation is devoted to the study of welding and its effect on the workpiece, focusing on the thermo and fluid dynamical phenomena occuring during a autogenous or nonautogenous arc fusion welding process. Its aim is to simulate the behaviour of the weld pool and analyze the consequence of the solid-liquid phase change, thus obtaining a methodology for predicting the appearance of weld defects related to solidification and cooling. 10. Mathematical models of biological interactions
Sammanfattning : Mathematical models are used to describe and analyse different types of biological interactions. From self-propelled particle models capturing the collective motion of fish schools to models in mathematical neuroscience describing the interactions between neurons to individual-based models of ecological interactions.
