  1. 1. On the Attachment of Lightning Flashes to Grounded Structures

    Författare :Marley Becerra; Vernon Cooray; Rajeev Thottappillil; Mats Boman; Ivo Gallimberti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Engineering physics; Lightning; Lightning attachment; Positive leader discharges; Lightning protection; Thunderstorms; Numerical modeling; Teknisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the physical modeling of the initiation and propagation of upward positive leader discharges from grounded structures during lightning strikes. It includes the analysis of upward leaders initiated under the influence of the electric field produced by a dominant negative cloud charge and due to the combined action of a negative thundercloud and a descending downward stepped negative leader. 2. 2. Features of the Electric Fields Generated by Lightning with Special Attention to Positive Ground Flashes

    Författare :Dalina Johari; Vernon Cooray; Mahbubur Rahman; Fridolin Heidler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; positive ground flashes; preliminary breakdown pulses; multiple-trains PBPs; positive leader; bidirectional leader; negative leader branch; subsequent return strokes; distant lightning; Engineering Science with specialization in Atmospheric Discharges; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot atmosfäriska urladdningar;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the main processes in positive ground flashes and the distant lightning environment for both positive and negative ground flashes. It presents the characteristics of the preliminary breakdown pulses (PBPs), the characteristics of the electric field pulses observed during leader propagation, and the characteristics of the electric fields produced by the first and the subsequent return strokes. 3. 3. Temporal and Wavelet Characteristics of Initial Breakdown and Narrow Bipolar Pulses of Lightning Flashes

    Författare :Mona Riza Mohd Esa; Vernon Cooray; Mahbubur Rahman; Farhad Rachidi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Initial breakdown; Lightning flash; Narrow bipolar pulse; Temporal-Wavelet characterization; Engineering Science with specialization in Atmospheric Discharges; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot atmosfäriska urladdningar;

    Sammanfattning : Temporal and wavelet characteristics of initial breakdown pulses are meticulously studied especially during the earliest moment of lightning events. Any possible features during the earliest moment that may exist which lead to either negative cloud-to-ground (CG), positive cloud-to-ground, cloud or isolated breakdown flashes in Sweden are investigated. 4. 4. Measurements of X-Ray Emission from Laboratory Sparks and Upward Initiated Lightning

    Författare :Pasan Hettiarachchi; Vernon Cooray; Mats Leijon; Mahbubur Rahman; Marcos Rubinstein; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X-ray; upward lighting; laboratory discharges; energy distribution;

    Sammanfattning : In 1925 Nobel laureate R. C. Wilson predicted that high electric fields of thunderstorms could accelerate electrons to relativistic energies which are capable of generating high energetic radiation. The first detection of X-rays from lightning was made in 2001 and from long sparks in 2005. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Characterizations of ground flashes from tropic to northern region

    Författare :Zikri Abadi Baharudin; Vernon Cooray; Mahbubur Rahman; Farhad Rachidi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Positive negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes; Initiation position; slow field changes; close ground flashes; preliminary breakdown process; Engineering Science with specialization in Atmospheric Discharges; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot atmosfäriska urladdningar;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis portrays new information concerning the cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes or ground flashes produced by thunderclouds. It emphasizes the importance of characterizing lightning studies as the relationship between lightning mechanisms, and of incorporating the influence of geographical location, latitude and storm type.
