21. Numerical study of particle suspensions in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
Sammanfattning : Solid or deformable particles suspended in a viscous fluid are of scientific and technological interest in a broad range of applications. Pyroclastic flows from volcanoes, sedimentation flows in river bed, food industries, oil-well drilling, as well as blood flow in the human body and the motion of suspended micro-organisms in water (like plankton) are among the possible examples. 22. Applications of molecular characters to breeding of Eucalyptus urophylla in Vietnam
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to investigate how to incorporate molecular genetics into the tree breeding program for E. urophylla. The material was a combined provenance and progeny trial, initially including 144 families from open-pollinated trees of nine provenances. LÄS MER
23. Wood-living beetle diversity and Swedish forest management
Sammanfattning : Humans have impacted Fennoscandian forests for thousands of years, through grazing, burning, and since the industrial revolution increasingly through efficient industrial forestry. These impacts have changed the composition and structure of these forests, by reducing forest age, simplifying forest structure, and reducing the amount of broadleaved trees, among other things. 24. Human factors in mechanized cut-to-length forest operations
Sammanfattning : Although forest operations research has a more than 50-year-long tradition in the field of human factors, there is a current decline in resources put on continuous and systematic human factors research. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis was to contribute new knowledge on working conditions in mechanized cut-to-length logging operations and their relationship to system performance. LÄS MER
25. Old trees in young forests : Biodiversity management in planted conifer forests in southern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Sweden’s long history of intensive forest management has made conservation measures in the forest landscape necessary to counteract the loss of biodiversity. Retention forestry has been systematically practiced since 1993 and consists of the preservation of different structures and habitats to create and maintain suitable habitats for species that do not cope well with clear-cutting.
