1. SOD1 Aggregation : Relevance of thermodynamic stability
Sammanfattning : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the upper and lower motor neurons causing muscle atrophy and paralysis followed by death. Aggregates containing superoxide dismutase (SOD1) are found as pathological hallmark in diseased ALS patients. LÄS MER
2. Disordered Icosahedral Boron-Rich Solids : A Theoretical Study of Thermodynamic Stability and Properties
Sammanfattning : This thesis is a theoretical study of configurational disorder in icosahedral boron-rich solids, in particular boron carbide, including also the development of a methodological framework for treating configurational disorder in such materials, namely superatom-special quasirandom structure (SA-SQS). In terms of its practical implementations, the SA-SQS method is demonstrated to be capable of efficiently modeling configurational disorder in icosahedral boron-rich solids, whiles the thermodynamic stability as well as the properties of the configurationally disordered icosahedral boron-rich solids, modeled from the SA-SQS method, can be directly investigated, using the density functional theory (DFT). 3. Phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of high-alloy tool steels : theoretical and experimental approach
Sammanfattning : The recent development of tool steels and high-speed steels has led to a significant increase in alloy additions, such as Co, Cr, Mo, N, V, and W. Knowledge about the phase relations in these multicomponent alloys, that is, the relative stability between different carbides or the solubility of different elements in the carbides and in the matrix phase, is essential for understanding the behaviour of these alloys in heat treatments. 4. Unravelling protein stability and aggregation
Sammanfattning : Proteins are complex macromolecules that are fundamental to all living species. The stability of proteins are governed by non-covalent forces within the protein and between the protein and its surrounding environment. LÄS MER
5. Protein stability and mobility in live cells : Revelation of the intracellular diffusive interaction organization mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Biochemical processes inside living cells take place in a confined and highly crowded environment. As such, macromolecular crowding, one of the most important physicochemical properties of cytoplasm, is an essential element of cell physiology. LÄS MER
