  1. 16. Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase : new insights into an old target

    Författare :Gergana Popova; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides are important for both biosynthetic and regulatory pathways in cells. As constituents of the DNA and RNA molecules, the requirements for nucleotides in actively dividing cells are increased. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Identification of compounds that target glioma initiating cells

    Författare :Shimei Wee; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Glioblastoma multiforme is a common form of brain tumor that leads to debilitating effects despite the current regiment of treatment, which includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. With the discovery of glioma-initiating cells (GICs) that exists within the bulk tumor, some light has been shed on this disease. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Visualization of Peripheral Pain Generating Processes and Inflammation in Musculoskeletal Tissue using [11C]-D-deprenyl PET

    Författare :Mikko Aarnio; Torsten Gordh; Jens Sörensen; Magnus Peterson; Lars Ståhle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ankle injuries; arthritis; binding site; binding target; carbon-11; deprenyl; high-throughput screening; inflammation; monoamine oxi-dase; pain; PET; whiplash; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Sammanfattning : An objective visualization and quantification of pain-generating processes in the periphery would alter pain diagnosis and represent an important paradigm shift in pain research. Positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand [11C]-D-deprenyl has shown an elevated uptake in painful inflammatory arthritis and whiplash-associated disorder. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Phylogenetic Relationships, Biogeography and Species Delimitation: A case study on southern African Silene (Caryophyllaceae)

    Författare :Ntwai A. Moiloa; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elisanthe; Illumina sequencing; Multispecies coalescent model; NGS; Phylogenetics; Phylogeography; species-trees; STACEY; target-capture;

    Sammanfattning : The primary aim of this thesis was to explore the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of African members of the plant genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae), with special focus on the eight native southern African taxa. Three loci (the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and the rps16 and matK regions from the plastid genome) generated using traditional Sanger sequencing were used to infer the phylogenetic positions of African taxa, while sequence data from 28 low copy nuclear loci were generated using the target capture method to explore shallow phylogenetic relationships within southern African taxa. 5. 20. Thioredoxin reductase as a target enzyme for electrophilic anticancer drugs

    Författare :Sofi Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a common attribute of most cancer cells. One strategy for cancer cells to maneuver the increased and potentially toxic levels of ROS is to induce the expression of cellular antioxidants and redox regulators, such as the thioredoxin (Trx) system.
