  1. 1. Lost in Translation : Speech recognition and memory processes in native and non-native language perception

    Författare :Lisa Kilman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Speech perception; perceived disturbance; native; non-native; working memory; language proficiency; episodic long-term memory; Taluppfattning; upplevd störning; modersmål; ett andra språk; arbetsminne; språkfärdigheter; episodiskt långtids-minne;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis employed an integrated approach and investigated intra- and inter-individual differences relevant for normally hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) adults in native (Swedish) and non-native (English) languages in adverse listening conditions. The integrated approach encompassed the role of cognition as a focal point of interest as well as perceptualauditory and linguistic factors. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Effects of environmental acoustic factors, individual differences and musical training on speech perception in simulated classrooms

    Författare :Douglas MacCutcheon; Robert Ljung; Daniel Västfjäll; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; speech in noise; cognition; perception; musical training; spatial listening; virtual classroom environment; bakgrundsljud; kognition; taluppfattning; musikalisk träning; rumsligt lyssnande; virtuella klassrumsmiljöer; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Sammanfattning : Formal learning takes place primarily through speech perception in classroom environments and is therefore dependent on the listener’s ability to cope with a number of acoustic factors that interfere with the speech signal. As classrooms are inclusive spaces accommodating learners with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds, this research investigated some of the ways in which individual differences in supporting cognitive skills are related to speech perception outcomes in various challenging acoustic environments. 3. 3. Cognition in Hearing Aid Users : Memory for Everyday Speech

    Författare :Hoi Ning Elaine Ng; Jerker Rönnberg; Mary Rudner; Thomas Lunner; Kevin Munro; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Hearing aid; working memory; free recall; noise reduction; speech recognition; Hörapparat; arbetsminne; återgivning; brusreducering; taluppfattning;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis investigated the importance of cognition for speech understanding in experienced and new hearing aid users. The aims were 1) to develop a cognitive test (Sentence-final Word Identification and Recall, or SWIR test) to measure the effects of a noise reduction algorithm on processing of highly intelligible speech (everyday sentences); 2) to investigate, using the SWIR test, whether hearing aid signal processing would affect memory for heard speech in experienced hearing aid users; 3) to test whether the effects of signal processing on the ability to recall speech would interact with background noise and individual differences in working memory capacity; 4) to explore the potential clinical application of the SWIR test; and 5) to examine the relationship between cognition and speech recognition in noise in new users over the first six months of hearing aid use. Sammanfattning : Age affects hearing and cognitive abilities. Older people, with and without hearing impairment (HI), exhibit difficulties in hearing speech in noise. LÄS MER

    Författare :Ingegerd Ericsson; Malmö högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; academic achievements; idrottsundervisning; koncentration; studieresultat; motorisk utveckling; physical education; motor training; motor skill observations; cognition; attention; Physical training; Cognition; motorial learning; sport; Idrott; gymnastik; motorisk inlärning;

    Sammanfattning : Denna studie visar betydelsen av ökad idrottsundervisning, fysisk aktivitet och extra motorisk träning i skolan. Undersökningen är en delstudie i Bunkefloprojektet - en hälsofrämjande livsstil. En interventionsgrupp bestående av två årskullar elever har en obligatorisk rörelselektion varje skoldag. LÄS MER
