21. Presentation of Salmonella antigens by dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : This study investigates the interaction between dendritic cells (DC) and the Gram negative intracellular bacterium Salmonella typhimurium. Using in vitro and in vivo approaches, the capacity of DC to directly and indirectly present antigens from Salmonella-infected cells, cytokine production by infected DC, and activation of bacteria-specific T cells was analyzed. 22. Susceptibility gene mapping in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by relapsing or progressive demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS). Increasing evidence supports that genetic factors confer susceptibility to MS resulting in an unknown mode of inheritance as a complex trait. LÄS MER
23. Transforming Growth Factor-b, Regulatory functions on normal lymphocytes and tumor outgrowth Regulatory functions on normal lymphocytes and tumor outgrowth
Sammanfattning : Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-b) is a well-characterised growth regulatory factor, which acts on most cell types. This thesis has focused on the regulatory roles of TGF-b on normal lymphocytes. One interesting finding is that TGF-b acts both costimulatory and inhibitory on T-lymphocytes. LÄS MER
24. The response of mast cells and serglycin-dependent proteases to parasitic infection : studies on mast cells during Toxoplasma gondii (murine) and Dictyocaulus vivparus (bovine) infection
Sammanfattning : The proteoglycan (PG), serglycin (SG), is expressed in several hematopoietic cells and studies of the SG knockout mice (SG-/-) revealed prominent effects on the storage of certain mouse mast cell proteases (mMCPs) such as mMCP-4, -5 and -6.In this thesis, the role of SGPG during parasitic infection was addressed. 25. Liver transplantation in man. Gastrointestinal perfusion and inflammatory response
Sammanfattning : Patients undergoing liver transplantation develop a systemic inflammatory response which eventually continues with development of a multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Gastro-intestinal hypoxia or bacterial translocation has been proposed as the "motor" of MODS. LÄS MER
