1. Studies on the Gamma Radiation Environment in Sweden with Special Reference to 137Cs
Sammanfattning : Gamma radiation in the environment today mainly originates from naturally occurring radionuclides, but anthropogenic radionuclides, such as 137Cs, contribute in some areas. In order to assess population exposure in case of fallout from nuclear weapons (NWF) or accidents, knowledge and monitoring of external gamma radiation and radionuclide concentrations in the environment is important. 2. Irradiation of members of the general public from radioactive caesium following the Chernobyl reactor accident. Field studies in a highly contaminated area in the Bryansk region, Russia
Sammanfattning : From 1990 to 1998, estimations of the effective dose from external as well as internal irradiation from 137Cs and 134Cs were carried out for inhabitants in rural villages in the Bryansk region, Russia, highly contaminated due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The villages were situated about 180 km from the Chernobyl power plant and the deposition of 137Cs was in the range 0. LÄS MER
3. Pilot studies of probiotics in the prevention of type 1 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (TlD) is considered to be an autoimmune disease leading to destruction of the insulin producing beta cells in pancreas. Interaction between genetic factors and environmental factors are believed to trigger the autoimmune response finally causing T1D. A number of environmental factors have been suggested to be associated with TlD. LÄS MER
4. Prosodic and Phonological Ability in Children with Developmental Language Disorder and Children with Hearing Impairment : In the Context of Word and Nonword Repetition
Sammanfattning : Many children with developmental language disorder (DLD) exhibit difficulties with phonology, i.e. the sounds of language. Children with any degree of hearing impairment (HI) are at an increased risk of problems with spoken language, including phonology. LÄS MER
5. Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy of macromolecular assemblies
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) was used to study the structure of three macromolecular assemblies: the two hemocyanin isoforms from Rapana thomasiana, the Pyrococcus furiosus chaperonin, and the ribosome from Escherichia coli. Hemocyanins are large respiratory proteins in arthropods and molluscs. LÄS MER
