    Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND Preoperative radiotherapy reduces local recurrence due to rectal cancer, but increases postoperative morbidity. The aim of this thesis was to study the impact of radiotherapy on extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling enzymes and growth factors after radiotherapy and also their possible use as surrogate markers for complications.     Sammanfattning : Healing of periradicular lesions is a complex process. This thesis addressed some factors of importance to the outcome, namely treatment options and host response in cases of refractory lesions, levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the inflammatory lesions and the response of the cytokines to preoperative administration of antibiotics.     Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to examine the role of growth factors and the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) system in human endometrial angiogenesis. Growth factors as well as progesterone increased expression of the main inhibitor of uPA (PAI-1) in primary cultures of endometrial stromal cells. LÄS MER

Apoptosis has to be strictly controlled, yet inappropriately activated or suppressed apoptototic may contribute to a variety of diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disorders and neurodegenerative conditions.     Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) and its animal model, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), are diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by perivascular mononuclear inflammation and oligodendrocyte loss with demyelination. However, it is still not clear whether the pathology in MS and EAE is due to neuroantigen-specific CD4+ T cell-mediated autoimmune responses and/or bystander myelin damage resulting from an inflammatory response.
