1. Risk factors for dementia. Lifestyle, hormones, neurochemistry, and genetics
Sammanfattning : Objective: The aim of this thesis was to expand the understanding about the effects of lifestyle factors, indicators of endogenous estrogens, and genetic factors on the risk of dementia and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Method: We used population-based samples from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies (H70-studies), the Prospective Population Study of Women (PPSW), and the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA 70+ study). 2. Allergy and Alzheimer disease
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive dementia with devastating effects for the patients and their families. The treatments available are purely symptomatic and there is need for treatment strategies aiming at the etiopathogenesis of AD. LÄS MER
3. Biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and the APOE polymorphism
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers reflecting the core pathology of AD are now widely used for diagnosis making, in particular β-amyloid[1-42] (Aβ42) reflecting amyloid plaque pathology, phosphorylated tau (P-tau) reflecting neurofibrillary tangle pathology and total tau (T-tau) reflecting general neurodegeneration. In addition, blood-based biomarkers for AD are in the pipeline with recent studies showing promising diagnostic potential. LÄS MER
4. CSF biomarkers in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus- Diagnostics and pathophysiology
Sammanfattning : Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a disease of the elderly with enlarged ventricles despite a normal CSF pressure. Clinically, iNPH presents with gait- and balance disturbances, cognitive decline and incontinence. As the symptoms are reversed by shunt surgery, precise diagnostics is of essence. LÄS MER
5. Proteomics Studies of Subjects with Alzheimer’s Disease and Chronic Pain
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease and the major cause of dementia, affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Chronic pain is long-lasting, persistent pain that affects more than 1.5 billion of the world population. LÄS MER
