11. Genetic Mapping of Susceptibility Genes for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with unknown etiology. The aim of this thesis was to identify susceptibility regions through genetic mapping, using model-based linkage analysis on nuclear and extended SLE multicase families. LÄS MER
12. Osteoporosis in SLE
Sammanfattning : As the treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) has become more effective the focus has partly shifted from main concern of short term morbidity and survival to long term complications such as osteoporosis. The aims of this thesis were to a) determine prevalence and risk factors of osteoporosis and of b) vertebral fractures c) evaluate if adequate osteoporotic treatment was provided d) determine if resistin, an adipokine with proposed pro-inflammatory properties, was associated with markers of inflammation or bone mineral density (BMD) and to e) investigate patients self reported health related quality of life (HRQOL) and its relationship to disease variables and employment status in female SLE patients. 13. Genetic Contributions to Manifestations and Prognosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a severe autoimmune disease with a multifactorial aetiology and an extremely heterogenous clinical picture. This thesis explores the impact of SLE genetic variants, through their cumulative effect or gene-environment interactions, on SLE manifestations and complications. LÄS MER
14. Cardiovascular disease in systemic lupus erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This is an important clinical problem and a main objective of this study was to identify risk factors and underlying mechanisms. LÄS MER
15. Susceptibility genes in systemic lupus erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease for which the incidence and prevalence vary between populations and also between males and females. SLE is characterized by production of pathogenic autoantibodies against nuclear antigens due to a breakdown in self-tolerance and the pathogenesis is associated with the formation of immune complexes, followed by tissue inflammation in multiple organs, such as the skin, joints, heart and kidneys.
