16. Derivatising Carbohydrates for Biological Applications
Sammanfattning : Carbohydrates have a wide variety of functions in Nature. The somewhat old view of carbohydrates only functioning as building blocks or energy sources, has been overturned by the newer insight that carbohydrates are deeply involved in recognition processes, such as receptors for bacteria, viruses, antibodies and proteins. 17. Mapping a Landscape of Developer Assisting Software Bots
Sammanfattning : Bots in software development have gained traction in research and in practice. However, there is no consensus on what properties and characteristics that define a bot. The term is used to describe a plethora of different tools with different usages, benefits and challenges. LÄS MER
18. The expert and medical progress : Experts' influence on the views of peptic ulcer and dyspepsia and its treatment in Scandinavia during five decades
Sammanfattning : In this study the experts' influence on the recommendations for treatment of peptic ulcer in Scandinavia during the period 1940-1975, on the development of the first H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, on the adoption and use of H-receptor antagonists during the introductory phase in Scandinavia 1978-1986, and on the controversy about dyspepsia, is analysed.Experts during 1940-1960 promoted their "cures" containing severe diet restrictions and bed rest, convinced of their benefit. 19. Tunable surfaces : using polyoxoniobates and -tantalates as molecular building blocks
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes and explains the use of aqueous polyoxometalates (POMs), as molecular building blocks in the fabrication of tunable solid-state materials, such as thin films. Microwave irradiation in the synthesis of Nb10, Nb6 and Ta6 is a rapid and efficient alternative to conventional hydrothermal methods, while offering equal – if not greater yields – of product. 20. The advantages of being small : Glycosyltransferases in many dimensions and glycolipid synthesis in Mycoplasma Pneumoniae
Sammanfattning : The synthesis and breakdown of sugars is one of the most important functions in Nature. Consequently, sugar structures are used both as energy storage and as building blocks to stabilise and protect the cell. The formation of these structures is performed by glycosyltransferases (GT), an enzyme group structurally conserved within all kingdoms. LÄS MER
