1. SHUT UP 'N' PLAY! Negotiating the Musical Work
Sammanfattning : 'SHUT UP ’N’ PLAY! Negotiating the Musical Work’ is a piece of artistic research that attempts to merge artistic practice, qualitative research methods and critical analysis in a project concerned with contemporary performance practices, and specifically how these practices are created and transmitted in the interaction between composer and performer. By way of a critical reading of the musico-philosophical discussion of the ontology of the musical work and by way of a deconstruction of the concept of musical interpretation I propose a model in which the identity of the musical work is analysed as the result of interaction between multiple agents: composer, performer, instrument, score and electronics, among others. 2. Schuberts "Stora C-dursymfoni" : Kommunikationen med ett musikaliskt konstverk : en tillämping av Paul Ricoeurs tolkningsbegrepp
Sammanfattning : The dissertation demonstrates how it is possible to apply the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics to a musical work-of-art and illustrates the approach with an interpretation of Schubert's Great C-major Symphony (D 944). Arguments are put forward to show that the meaning of a musical work-of-art can be naively grasped under favourable communicative conditions. LÄS MER
3. Rich in Nuances: a Performance-Oriented Study of Otto Olsson’s Organ Music
Sammanfattning : The dissertation deals with the organ music of Otto Olsson (1879–1964), a leading Swedish organist, church musician, composer, pedagogue, and organ expert in the first half of the 20th century. The aim of the study is to formulate a historical performance practice fro Olsson’s organ music, conceived within a late Romantic performance tradition, which must be regarded as lost. LÄS MER
4. Hilding Rosenbergs apokalyps : studier i Johannes uppenbarelse - ett musikverk i stridsutrustning
Sammanfattning : The intention of this dissertation is to provide a portrait of Hilding Rosenberg´s musical work "The Revelation of S:t John" (1940), for a large orchestra, chorus and recitation (recitative), through illuminating the work´s history of origin and basic literary and musical structure. As a composition initially intended for broadcast over the radio, the form and content of "The Revelation of S:t John" was to a great degree determined by the conditions dictated by radio at the time. Sammanfattning : This dissertation studies the processes which lead to the creation of the necessary preconditions for establishing institutions of high culture in Stockholm, between 1890-1926.How and Why these specific processes resulted in Stockholm establishing a permanent symphony orchestra and a purpose-built concert hall are the primary objects of this study.
