  1. 6. Bioaccessibility of Stainless Steels : Importance of Bulk and Surface Features

    Författare :Gunilla Herting; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Stuart Lyon; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stainless steel; iron; chromium; nickel; corrosion; metal release; artificial rain; synthetic body fluids; acetic acid; surface oxide; surface finish; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : With increasing environmental awareness, the desire to protect human beings and the environment from adverse effects induced by dispersed metals has become an issue of great concern and interest. New policies, such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) within the European Community, have been implemented to reduce hazards posed by the use of chemicals on producers and downstream users. 2. 7. Interfacial Properties of Biomacromolecular Model Systems: Surface Forces and Nanotribology

    Författare :Niklas Nordgren; Mark Rutland; Harry Brumer III; Robert Pelton; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; afm; surface force; friction; composite material; model surface; quartz crystal microbalance; dissipation; cellulose; xyloglucan; chitosan; colloidal probe; nanotribology; biomimetic; enzymatic; polysaccharide; graft; fiber; thiol; spring constant; calibration; lubrication; polyion; responsive.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The nanotribology, adhesion and related interfacial properties of biomacromolecular systems have been studied.  The aim was to elucidate the role of physisorbed and chemically grafted bio-polymers implicated as mediators for cellulose based processing and material design. 3. 8. Interactions between surfactants and starch : from starch granules to amylose solutions

    Författare :Isabel Mira; Per Claesson; James N. Bemiller; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; food science and technology; polymer chemistry; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : Starch is a mixture of two polysaccharides, amylose (AM) and amylopectin, which occurs naturally in the form of microscopic granules that are abundantly found in tubers, roots, cereal grains and fruits. In order to bring out their functional properties as thickeners and texture enhancers, starch granules are often disrupted by heating in excess water. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Stability and sorption capacity of montmorillonite colloids : Investigation of size fractional differences and effects of γ-irradiation

    Författare :Karin Norrfors; Susanna Wold; Daniel Kaplan; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; montmorillonite; colloids; size effect; γ-irradiation; sorption; colloid stability; radionuclides; montmorillonit; kolloider; storlekseffekt; γ-bestrålning; sorption; kollodial stabilitet; radionuklider; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Bentonite clay is intended to form one of the barriers in most repositories of spent nuclear fuel located in granite. One important function of the bentonite barrier is to retard transport of radionuclides in the event of waste canister failure. Bentonite has a high sorption capacity of cations and its main constituent is montmorillonite. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Based Bottle-Brush Polymers and their Interaction with the Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate : Solution and Interfacial Properties

    Författare :Joseph Iruthayaraj; Per M. Claesson; Regine v. Klitzing; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PEO brush polymers; brush polymers; PEO; poly ethylene oxide ; polymer-surfactant; sodium dodecyl sulphate SDS ; Ellipsomtery; PEO-SDS interactions; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work is to study the physico-chemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, based brush polymers both in solution and at solid/aqueous interfaces. The importance of studying the surface properties of brush polymers can be related to a broad spectrum of interfacial-related applications such as colloidal stability, lubrication, detergency, protein repellency to name a few.
