6. Bioaccessibility of Stainless Steels : Importance of Bulk and Surface Features
Sammanfattning : With increasing environmental awareness, the desire to protect human beings and the environment from adverse effects induced by dispersed metals has become an issue of great concern and interest. New policies, such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) within the European Community, have been implemented to reduce hazards posed by the use of chemicals on producers and downstream users. 7. Interfacial Properties of Biomacromolecular Model Systems: Surface Forces and Nanotribology
Sammanfattning : The nanotribology, adhesion and related interfacial properties of biomacromolecular systems have been studied. The aim was to elucidate the role of physisorbed and chemically grafted bio-polymers implicated as mediators for cellulose based processing and material design. LÄS MER
8. Interactions between surfactants and starch : from starch granules to amylose solutions
Sammanfattning : Starch is a mixture of two polysaccharides, amylose (AM) and amylopectin, which occurs naturally in the form of microscopic granules that are abundantly found in tubers, roots, cereal grains and fruits. In order to bring out their functional properties as thickeners and texture enhancers, starch granules are often disrupted by heating in excess water. LÄS MER
9. Stability and sorption capacity of montmorillonite colloids : Investigation of size fractional differences and effects of γ-irradiation
Sammanfattning : Bentonite clay is intended to form one of the barriers in most repositories of spent nuclear fuel located in granite. One important function of the bentonite barrier is to retard transport of radionuclides in the event of waste canister failure. Bentonite has a high sorption capacity of cations and its main constituent is montmorillonite. LÄS MER
10. Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Based Bottle-Brush Polymers and their Interaction with the Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate : Solution and Interfacial Properties
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work is to study the physico-chemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, based brush polymers both in solution and at solid/aqueous interfaces. The importance of studying the surface properties of brush polymers can be related to a broad spectrum of interfacial-related applications such as colloidal stability, lubrication, detergency, protein repellency to name a few.
