With the onset of Internet wide applications there is an increasing need to quantify reliability, dependability and performance of these systems, both as a guide in system design as well as a means to understand the fundamental properties of large-scale distributed systems. Sammanfattning : In this thesis we have thermodynamically characterized finite time processes performed on a colloidal particle, kept in contact with thermal reservoir(s). Thermodynamic processes are implemented on the colloidal particle by systematically changing the confining potential in a time dependent way, according to an external driving protocol or by controlling the environmental conditions over a finite duration. Sammanfattning : An inherent feature of small systems in contact with thermal reservoirs, be it a pollen grain in water, or an active microbe flagellum, is fluctuations. Even with advanced microscopic techniques, distinguishing active, non-equilibrium processes defined by a constant dissipation of energy to the environment from passive, equilibrium processes is a very challenging task and a vastly developing field of research. Sammanfattning : In this thesis we study the phase diagrams of Zn symmetric chains. We start with investigating the topological phases of the Kitaev chain, a Z2 symmetric model, with long range couplings and a phase gradient. LÄS MER
