  1. 1. Water and hydroxyl in luminous infrared galaxies: Spectroscopic observations and modelling

    Författare :Niklas Falstad; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ISM: molecules; Galaxies: individual: Zw 049.057; Line: formation; Galaxies: ISM; Submillimeter: galaxies; Infrared: galaxies;

    Sammanfattning : Many luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 Lsun emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscuring material in these regions, the nature of the nuclear power source cannot be determined using direct observations in the optical or IR. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Molecular observations of obscured galaxy nuclei

    Författare :Niklas Falstad; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxies: nuclei; Galaxies: ISM; Infrared: galaxies; ISM: Molecules; Submillimeter: galaxies;

    Sammanfattning : It is becoming evident that some (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 L☉  emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscured nature of these objects, their inner regions are hidden from examination using optical or infrared lines. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Observations of submillimeter galaxies and of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect toward clusters of galaxies

    Författare :Daniel Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes observations of a population of high-redshift, dusty star-forming galaxies: thesubmillimeter (submm) galaxies. The submm galaxies detected so far are very massive and lumi-nous systems, with huge star-formation-rates (SFR>100Myr−1), large reservoirs of moleculargas (Mgas∼1×1010M) and large dynamical masses (Mdyn>1010M). 5. 5. High-redshift active galactic nuclei and their environment

    Författare :Judit Fogasy; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; galaxies: evolution -- galaxies: high-redshift -- galaxies: active -- galaxies: Starburst -- -- Submillimeter: galaxies;

    Sammanfattning : In order to understand the formation and evolution of local massive galaxies and to reveal the processes that engineered the tight correlations found between their supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and bulge mass or velocity dispersion, the study of powerful, high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their environment is crucial. AGNs are luminous targets providing important clues to galaxy evolution, as their central SMBH is growing at high rates, which opens the opportunity to unfold how the growth of the black hole influences the growth of its host galaxy.
