Sammanfattning : Tree stumps could make a significant contribution to the transition from a fossil- to a bio-based economy, but current stump harvesting operations have adverse ecological effects. The ground disturbance caused by the up-rooting leads to increased carbon emissions from the soil and increases risks of leaching of heavy metals and nutrients, while removal of stump wood increases nutrient removal and reduces amounts of dead wood in the forest. Sammanfattning : Forest ecosystems cover 31% of the terrestrial land area and store large amounts of carbon in biomass and in soils. The 2015 Paris Agreement recognizes the importance of sinks and reservoirs of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in forests and the importance of enhancing them through sustainable forest management policies. Sammanfattning : Mercury (Hg) is an element of major concern in boreal freshwater ecosystems, due to high concentrations of Hg in fish. Forestry operations have been reported to increase the concentrations and loads of Hg to surface waters. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Research on the effects from forest management on biodiversity has been going on for decades but still there are many questions unanswered. With every introduction of a new forestry method there is risk for increased pressure on biodiversity. The harvesting of low stumps left after final harvesting is a relatively new method used in forestry. LÄS MER
5. Stump as a fuel : the influence of harvesting technique and storage method on fuel quality of Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : Uncertain long-term availability of fossil fuels and the negative environmental impact of using it have created an urgent need for reliable renewable energy sources. Wood fuel, particularly forest residues is one of these sources which are in high demand in Sweden today. LÄS MER
