  1. 1. Resistance to phagocytosis in Streptococcus pyogenes

    Författare :Fredric Carlsson; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infektioner; Infections; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; phagocytosis; innate immunity; complement; Streptococcus pyogenes; M protein;

    Sammanfattning : Phagocytosis of Streptococcus pyogenes is complement dependent. However, the cell wall-associated M protein, which exists in >100 different serotypes (M types), enables the bacteria to evade phagocytosis. LÄS MER

    Författare :Anders Österlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Streptococcus pyogenes; epidemiology; invasive disease; recurrentpharyngotonsillitis; RAPD; intracellular; biopsy culture; tonsils; immunohistochemistry; electron microscopy; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Sammanfattning : The bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes is a common human pathogen known to cause bothuncomplicated and severe infections. Epidemics of invasive disease caused by S. pyogenesserotype T1 were seen in the county of Uppsala, Sweden, in 19881989 and 1994. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Quantifying Phagocytosis – studies on the antibody response during invasive streptococcal infections

    Författare :Therese de Neergaard; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes GAS ; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; invasive infection; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes; Group A Streptococcus; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; Invasive infection;

    Sammanfattning : The interaction between our immune system and pathogens encompasses a complex spectrum from symbiosis to potentially life-threatening diseases. Throughout evolution, our immune system has evolved numerous strategies such as phagocytosis to combat infections and protect us from diseases. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Streptococcus pyogenes - a manipulator of human defences

    Författare :Fredrik Kahn; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus pyogenes; M protein; neutrophils; platelets; platelet-neutrophil complexes; fibrinogen; IgG; abscess; venous thrombosis; heparin binding protein; thrombocytopenia;

    Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pyogenes is a major human pathogen with more than 500 000 casualties annually of which at least 163 000 are due to invasive infections. The remainder is due to post-streptococcal complications with rheu¬matic heart disease constituting the majority. S. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mechanisms of phagocytosis resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes

    Författare :Heike Kotarsky; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; fibrinogen; FHL-1; Factor H; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; phagocytosis;

    Sammanfattning : A distinguishing feature of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is their ability to resist phagocytosis in whole human blood in the absence of type-specific antibodies, a property that is dependent on the expression of the surface associated M proteins. A common characteristic of M proteins is their interaction with a variety of host proteins including the complement regulatory protein factor H (FH) and fibrinogen that plays a key role in coagulation.
