  1. 1. Extrathymic T cell receptor gene rearrangement in human alimentary tract

    Författare :Anna Bas; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Sten Hammarström; Adrian Hayday; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; T cell maturation; recombination activating gene; preTα; human intestinal mucosa; intraepithelial lymphocytes; lamina propria lymphocytes; nasopharyngeal tonsil; Immunologi; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : T lymphocytes regulate the initiation, duration, and magnitude of adaptive immune responses and function as effector cells in cell mediated immunity. To become immunologically competent they must generate functional antigen receptors. This process takes place in the thymus and requires somatic recombination of T cell receptor (TCR) genes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Defence capabilities of human intestinal epithelial cells

    Författare :Anna Fahlgren; Sten Hammarström; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Gudmundur Gudmundsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; intestine; mucosa; epithelium; antimicrobial; defensins; glycocalyx; ulcerative colitis; Crohn´s disease; celiac disease; Immunologi; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : The epithelial cells lining the intestinal mucosa separate the underlying tissue from components of the intestinal lumen. Innate immunity mediated by intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) provides rapid protective functions against microorganisms. Innate immunity also participates in orchestrating adaptive immunity. 3. 3. Human intraepithelial lymphocytes : a comparative study of phenotype, morphology, and functional properties of intraepithelial lymphocytes in gut and oral mucosa

    Författare :Carina Lundqvist; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Sten Hammarström; Per Brandtzaeg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human intraepithelial lymphocytes; alimentary tract; intestinal epithelium; gut luminal antigens; gingiva; γδ T cells; immunoelectron microscopy; cytokine mRNA; RT-PCR; extrathymic T cell maturation; RAG-1; periodontitis; mucosal immune system; CD4-CD8- αβ T cells; CD8 γδ T cells;

    Sammanfattning : Human intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) constitute a unique cell population situated in the first line of defense of the alimentary tract. Here they are continuously exposed to a massive antigenic load of high complexity. However, different conditions prevail along the alimentary tract. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Human intestinal epithelial cells in innate immunity : interactions with normal microbiota and pathogenic bacteria

    Författare :Gangwei Ou; Sten Hammarström; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Agnes Wold; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Rod-shaped bacteria were previously shown to be associated with the small intestinal epithelium of children with celiac disease (CD). Using culture-dependent and independent methods, we characterized the microbiota of small intestine in children with CD and controls. The normal microbiota constitutes an unique organ-specific biofilm. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Specific and nonspecific immune mechanisms in human gut : a comparative study of normal and ulcerative colitis intestine

    Författare :Moorix Mo-Wai Yeung; Sten Hammarström; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human intestine; ulcerative colitis; lymphoid aggregates; intraepithelial lymphocytes; lamina propria lymphocytes; γδT-cells; cytokines; IL-2; carcinoembryonic antigen; biliary glycoprotein; epithelial cells; glycocalyx;

    Sammanfattning : The intestine, with its large mucosal surface area, digests and absorbs food nutrients and maintains a beneficial microbial flora in the colon. Local protective immune responses against intestinal pathogens ensure the survival of the individual. These immune reactions are both specific and non-specific in nature. LÄS MER
