  1. 1. Fossil Capital : The Rise of Steam-Power in the British Cotton Industry, c. 1825-1848, and the Roots of Global Warming

    Författare :Andreas Malm; Humanekologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Fossil economy; steam-power; water-power; cotton industry; Britain; capital accumulation; global warming;

    Sammanfattning : The more we know about the catastrophic implications of climate change, the more fossil fuels are burnt in the world. How did we get caught up in this mess? This thesis returns to a crucial moment in the emergence of the fossil economy: the rise of steam-power. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Steam Turbine Optimisation for Solar Thermal Power Plant Operation

    Författare :James Spelling; Andrew Martin; Magnus Genrup; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :solar thermal power; steam-turbine; start-up; cool-down; dispatchability increase; koncentrerad solenergi; ångturbin; uppstart; nedkylning; ökad flexibilitet;

    Sammanfattning : The provision of a sustainable energy supply is one of the most important issues facing humanity at the current time, given the strong dependence of social and economic prosperity on the availability of affordable energy and the growing environmental concerns about its production. Solar thermal power has established itself as a viable source of renewable power, capable of generating electricity at some of the most economically attractive rates. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Improving Concentrating Solar Power Plant Performance through Steam Turbine Flexibility

    Författare :Monika Topel; Björn Laumert; Markus Jöcker; Magnus Genrup; Tony Arts; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Concentrating Solar Power; Steam Turbines; Transients; Start-up; Energy Technology; Energiteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The amount of incoming solar energy to earth is greater than any other source. Among existing technologies to harness solar energy there is concentrating solar power (CSP). One advantage of CSP is that is dispatchable, meaning that it can provide power even when the sun is not shining. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Egypt Ignited : How Steam Power Arrived on the Nile and Integrated Egypt into Industrial Capitalism (1820s-76)

    Författare :Amr Ahmed; Humanekologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Energy history; history of technology; environmental history; steam power; capitalism; Industrial Revolution; Global warming; Egypt; modern history; agrarian production; biofuels; Sugar industry; cotton; Energihistoria; Teknikhistoria; Miljöhistoria; Ångmaskin; Kapitalism; Industriella revolutionen; global uppvärmning; Egypten; Modern historia; Jordbruksproduktion; biobränslen; Sockerindustrin; Bomull;

    Sammanfattning : How did fossil-fuelled technology find its way to Egypt on its way to global dominance? This thesis presents a socioecological history of energy technologies in agrarian production in pre-colonial Egypt (1820s – 76). It situates them in the nineteenth century, understood as the beginning of the epoch of the Capitalocene; and in Egypt’s case, this is simultaneously part of the rise of Britain’s fossil empire. 5. 5. High temperature corrosion in a biomass-fired power boiler : Reducing furnace wall corrosion in a waste wood-fired power plant with advanced steam data

    Författare :Yousef Alipour; Pamela Henderson; Peter Szalalos; Christofer Leygraf; Jan Froitzheim; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High temperature corrosion; Waterwalls; Power plant corrosion; NOx reducing enviroments; Biomass; Waste wood; Thermodynamic calculation modelling; corrosion-resistance alloy; Furnace wall corrosion; Högtemperaturekorrosion; Eldstadsväggar; kraftverks korrosion; låg Nox mijöer; biomassa; returträ; Termodynamisk modellering; korrosionsbeständighet legering; eldstadskorrosion;

    Sammanfattning : The use of waste (or recycled) wood as a fuel in heat and power stations is becoming more widespread in Sweden (and Europe), because it is CO2 neutral with a lower cost than forest fuel. However, it is a heterogeneous fuel with a high amount of chlorine, alkali and heavy metals which causes more corrosion than fossil fuels or forest fuel. LÄS MER
