  1. 1. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Författare :David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN. 2. 2. Seismicity Analyses Using Dense Network Data : Catalogue Statistics and Possible Foreshocks Investigated Using Empirical and Synthetic Data

    Författare :Angeliki Adamaki; Roland Roberts; Beata Orlecka-Sikora; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical Seismology; Earthquake Catalogue Statistics; Seismicity Patterns; Precursors; Foreshocks; Στατιστική Σεισμολογία; Κατάλογοι Σεισμών; Μοτίβα Σεισμικότητας; Πρόδρομα Φαινόμενα; Προσεισμοί; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Sammanfattning : Precursors related to seismicity patterns are probably the most promising phenomena for short-term earthquake forecasting, although it remains unclear if such forecasting is possible. Foreshock activity has often been recorded but its possible use as indicator of coming larger events is still debated due to the limited number of unambiguously observed foreshocks. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Physics of Aftershocks in the South Iceland Seismic Zone : Insights into the earthquake process from statistics and numerical modelling of aftershock sequences

    Författare :Mattias Lindman; Roland Roberts; Björn Lund; David Marsan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earthquake processes; Aftershocks; Physics of aftershocks; Omori law; Postseismic processes; Pore pressure diffusion; Poroelasticity; Statistical seismology; Self-organised criticality; Interevent time distributions; Waiting time distributions; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Sammanfattning : In seismology, an important goal is to attain a better understanding of the earthquake process. In this study of the physics of aftershock generation, I couple statistical analysis with modelling of physical processes in the postseismic period. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Seismic tomography : Algorithms and applications

    Författare :Zhengsheng Yao; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Geophysics Specialized In Seismology; geofysik; med inriktning mot seismologi;

    Sammanfattning : A preferred algorithm for seismic tomography needs to have capabilities including computational efficiency, minimal computer memory requirements, easy regularization and nonuniqueness analysis. In this thesis, regularised recursive least squares for seismic tomography is developed. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Analysis of regional seismic data by means of higher-order spectra

    Författare :Leif Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Sammanfattning : The use of higher-order statistical and spectral estimators as complementary analysis for conventional regional seismic data processing is studied. The issues addressed are; the properties of the complex bispectrum of regional seismic phases, the experimental detection performance of higher-order statistical detectors, discrimination between local earthquakes and explosions, statistical tests and bicoherence, biphase and spatial bispectrum analysis of regional P-, S, and Lg-phases.
