  1. 11. A multiscale approach for predicting freeze-thaw damage in asphalt mixtures

    Författare :Lisa Lövqvist; Nicole Kringos; Romain Balieu; Markus Oeser; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Structural Engineering and Bridges; Bro- och stålbyggnad;

    Sammanfattning : Cold and wet climates are a known threat to asphalt pavements, causing both an embrittlement of the material, making it more prone to failure, and increasing the risk of damage due to the presence of moisture in the material and freeze-thaw cycles causing expansion and contraction of the air voids as the moisture inside them freezes and thaws. This damage evolution can lead to an overall decrease of material properties and ultimately showcase itself as raveling, pot holes,and cracks. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Investigation on the self-healing capabilties of asphaltic materials using neutron imaging

    Författare :Adrian Markari; Nicole Kringos; Anders Kaestner; Romain Balieu; Lily Poulikakos; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Self-healing; bituminous materials; neutron imaging; sample size effect; reconstruction; image processing; volumetric analysis; Structural Engineering and Bridges; Bro- och stålbyggnad;

    Sammanfattning : Bitumen acts as a binding agent in asphalt mixtures where it binds the aggregates together. It is known for its potential to heal small cracks and recover its mechanical properties under the right conditions. Though this self-healing property is known, there is currently a lack of knowledge about the mechanisms that drive the process. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Pipe failure assessment and decision support system for a smart operation and maintenance : A comprehensive literature review and a conceptual decision analysis model proposal

    Författare :Roya Meydani; John Leander; Andreas Lindhe; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Urban pipeline systems’ rehabilitation; Infrastructure management; Decision-modeling; Decision analysis; Problem structuring; Uncertainty; Bayesian decision theory; Utility-based decision-making.; Urbana ledningssystemsunderhåll; Infrastruktur förvaltning; Beslutsmod- ellering; Beslutsanalys; Problembeskrivning; Osäkerhet; Bayesiansk beslutsteori; Nyttobaserad beslutsmodell; Bro- och stålbyggnad; Structural Engineering and Bridges;

    Sammanfattning : The reported research provides a rough guide to the best practice of decision modeling concerning urban pipeline systems’ rehabilitation. The thesis aims to bring attention to the fact that a proper decision-making model is a cornerstone for efficient infrastructure management. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges : Data-based damage detection method using Machine Learning

    Författare :Ana C. Neves; Raid Karoumi; Elsa Caetano; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Structural Health Monitoring; damage detection; Machine Learning; data-based methods; Artificial Neural Networks; Value of Information; Structural Engineering and Bridges; Bro- och stålbyggnad;

    Sammanfattning : Civil engineering structures built according to modern codes are designed for a service life of normally more than 100 years. At the same time, there is a growing pressure to keep existing aged structures in service despite the fact that they have reached the original designed lifetime, with bridges being a good example of this. 5. 15. Development and application of corotational finite elements for the analysis of steel structures in fire

    Författare :Luca Possidente; Jean-Marc Battini; Nicola Tondini; Paulo Vila Real; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Thermomechanical finite element; Shell element; 3D beam element; Steel structures; Buckling; Fire Safety Engineering; Structural Engineering and Bridges; Bro- och stålbyggnad;

    Sammanfattning : The ignition and the propagation of a fire inside a building may lead to global or local structural collapse, especially in steel framed structures. Indeed, steel structures are particularly vulnerable to thermal attack because of a high value of steel conductivity and of the small thickness that characterise the cross-sections. LÄS MER
