  1. 21. Making Place for Space : a History of 'Space Town' Kiruna 1943-2000

    Författare :Fredrick Backman; Erland Mårald; Jenny Eklöf; Sven Widmalm; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; history of science; history of technology; space physics; space science; space technology; geophysics; cultural geography; place-making; regional identity; Kiruna; Sweden; 20th century; History Of Sciences and Ideas; idé- och lärdomshistoria;

    Sammanfattning : Science and technology have a tendency to clump together in places where they spawn other forms of societal activities. Sometimes these places become famous through processes known as place-making, or the social construction of place. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Plasma Interactions with Icy Bodies in the Solar System

    Författare :Jesper Lindkvist; Mats Holmström; Martin Wieser; Elias Roussos; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasma interactions; icy bodies; solar system; space physics; plasma physics; hybrid model; numerical model; solar wind; magnetosphere; sub-Alfvénic; subsonic; non-collisional; atmosphereless; exosphere; coma; subsurface ocean; induction; magnetic dipole; pick-up ion; mass-loading; moon; natural satellite; dwarf planet; comet; Jupiter; Jovian; Callisto; Ceres; 67P; Churyumov-Gerasimenko; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Here I study the “plasma interactions with icy bodies in the solar system”, that is, my quest to understand the fundamental processes that govern such interactions. By using numerical modelling combined with in situ observations, one can infer the internal structure of icy bodies and their plasma environments. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Substorm Features in the High-Latitude Ionosphere and Magnetosphere : Multi-Instrument Observations

    Författare :Eva Borälv; Hermann Opgenoorth; Mark Lester; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Substorm; Convection; magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Sammanfattning : The space around Earth, confined in the terrestrial magnetosphere, is to some extent shielded from the Sun's solar wind plasma and magnetic field. During certain conditions, however, strong interaction can occur between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, resulting in magnetospheric activity of several forms, among which substorms and storms are the most prominent. 4. 24. The effect of spacecraft charging on low-energy ion measurements around comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

    Författare :Sofia Bergman; Gabriella Stenberg Wieser; Martin Wieser; Gert Brodin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Spacecraft charging; low-energy ions; space physics; plasma physics; comet; Rosetta; SPIS; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : A spacecraft in space interacts with the surrounding environment and aqcuires an electrostatic potential. Charged particles are constantly bombarding the surface of the spacecraft, and at the same time solar EUV radiation induces photoemission, causing electrons to be emitted from the surface. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Drift-Type Waves in Rotating Tokamak Plasma

    Författare :Elina Asp; Vladimir Pavlenko; Hans Nordman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; fusion; plasma; tokamak; rotation; drift; ship; ITG; TE; Landau; Te Ti; hot-electron; confinement; stiffness; Weiland; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Sammanfattning : The concept of energy production through the fusion of two light nuclei has been studied since the 1950’s. One of the major problems that fusion scientists have encountered is the confinement of the hot ionised gas, i.e. the plasma, in which the fusion process takes place. LÄS MER
