6. Characterization of soot in air and rain over southern Asia
Sammanfattning : Filter-based optical measurements of light absorbing particulate matter at awavelength of about 550 nm, here referred to as soot, in air and rainwaterhave been performed during the period from 1st June 2005 to 31th May 2009at Godavari in Nepal, Sinhagad in India and Hanimaadhoo in The Maldives.A method for determination of water-insoluble light absorbing matter inrainwater has been developed. 7. Multiscale methods for the fundamental understanding of diesel soot mitigation
Sammanfattning : Current regulations for diesel exhaust emissions cannot be met by engine improvements alone, and for this reason the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a widely used aftertreatment component for the control of diesel particulate matter (PM). The DPF functions by trapping PM and destroying it by oxidation. LÄS MER
8. Optical investigations and characterization of soot of different morphology and maturity
Sammanfattning : The formation path from small poorly absorbing incipient soot to larger fractal-like strongly absorbing black soot is extensive, and along this path the optical and physicochemical properties of the soot evolve. Soot emitted into the atmosphere may originate from some stage of this process, which will result in a wide spectrum of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere which may interact with the sun and influence the radiative balance of the earth. 9. Physicochemical properties and atmospheric ageing of soot - investigated though aerosol mass spectrometry
Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles contribute significantly to the global burden of disease, and remain the main source of uncertainty in assessments of human-induced climate change. The microphysical characterization of particles is necessary to understand the roles they play in the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health, and in the energy budget of our planet. 10. Combustion Studies of Soot and Fuel Based on Use of Laser Diagnostics
Sammanfattning : In the work described in the present thesis, laser techniques for combustion engine diagnostics were developed and applied. The main techniques were laser-induced incandescence (LII) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), used for both flame and engine diagnostics. LÄS MER
