1. Modelling and Simulation of Electro-catalysts for Green Energy : From Solvated Complexes to Solid-Liquid Interfaces
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have worked with solid-liquid interfaces, adsorbed molecules on the surface, and solvated complexes using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to find possible signatures that could help design suitable energy materials. More specifically, I have explored hybrid electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), XPS fingerprints of gas-phase melamine (monomer, dimer, trimer, and hexagonal packed arrangement), hexagonally packed melamine adsorbed on the Au(111) surface, and high-valence Ruthenium complexes along a reaction pathway in aqueous solution through a joint theory-experiment approach. 2. Kinetic Measurements Using Nanoplasmonic Sensing
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the nanoplasmonic sensing technique was used to study kinetics of (i) the oxidation of Al nanoparticles in air and water and (ii) the solid-liquid phase transition in Sn nanoparticles. The nanoplasmonic sensing technique detects changes of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in metal nanoparticles. LÄS MER
3. Nanoplasmonic Sensing for Materials Science
Sammanfattning : With the rising importance of nanoscience and nanotechnology, there is a need for new sensitive and easy-to-use characterization techniques able to follow processes at the nanoscale. In this thesis different aspects of nanoplasmonic sensing for studying materials science processes at the nanoscale are demonstrated and discussed for the following model systems: oxidation/corrosion of Al and Cu and the solid-liquid phase transition of Sn. 4. Interfacial Properties of Lipid Liquid Crystalline Nanoparticles
Sammanfattning : Lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles are studied for their potential as biocompatible carriers for pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic applications. Their potential as delivery vehicles is due to their nanometer size, their controllable structure and physical properties and their large carrying capacity of a wide range of molecules. LÄS MER
5. Protein engineering for biophysical studies of protein folding, stability and surface interactions
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis can be split into two parts, one that is dealing with the stability and stabilization of proteins on its own merits and a second part that deals with the protein adsorption orientation on solid surfaces and how the stability of a protein influences the behavior at a solid/liquid interface. Thus, the common denominator and focus have been on protein stability. LÄS MER
