11. 5-HT2A : a serotonin receptor with a possible role in joint diseases
Sammanfattning : BackgroundSerotonin (5-HT), an amino acid derivative and neurotransmitter, has for long been studied in relation to inflammation. It is an endogenous ligand for several different types of serotonin receptors. The serotonin receptor 5-HT2A has been reported to have a role in the pathophysiology of arthritis in animal experiment models. LÄS MER
12. Pathogenetic factors of importance for the development and progression of rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation eventually leading to the destruction of cartilage and bone. The aetiopathogenesis is not completely understood, but previous studies have shown that the disease is multifactorial with genetic, environmental and hormonal factors involved. Immune cells, e. 13. Aspects on inflammation and cardiovascular comorbidity in rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : There is an increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) comorbidity among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with premature atherosclerosis, and a higher incidence of CV events, compared with the general population. Disease related factors add to the CV risk, and interact with the traditional CV risk factors. LÄS MER
14. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Sammanfattning : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 15. Genetic studies in rheumatoid arthritis : familial studies and analysis of relationships to atherothrombotic comorbidity
Sammanfattning : Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease mainly affecting the joints but has also extra articular manifestations and an increased cardiovascular (CV) co-morbidity. Rheumatoid factor (RF) and antibodies against citrullinated proteins/peptides (ACPA) are diagnostically important and are related to a more severe disease. LÄS MER
