1. Recycling Filter Substrates used for Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater as Soil Amendments
Sammanfattning : This thesis studied the viability of recycling filter substrates as soil amendments after being used in on-site systems for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Focus was put on the materials Filtra P and Polonite, which are commercial products used in compact filters in Sweden. LÄS MER
2. Influence of soil amendments and soil properties on macro– and micronutrient availability to microorganisms and plants
Sammanfattning : Utilising by-products from industrial and domestic activities and from bioenergy production is one of the new ways of recovering and re-using nutrient resources in agriculture. However, these by-products can potentially add toxic elements or alter soil properties in ways that harm the soil and related environments. LÄS MER
3. On the investigation of chemical parameters reflecting microbial activity linked to nutrient availability in forest soil
Sammanfattning : As agrarian society developed, the most fertile soils able to sustain the nutritional requirements needed for high crop yield were assigned to farming, while the more penurious soils were left to uphold the forest ecosystems. Some temperate forests are developed on acidic soils considered to be nutrient poor, as much of the inorganic nutrients are entrapped in poorly weatherable soil minerals and not easily accessed by plant roots. 4. Denitrification as an adaptive trait in soil and groundwater bacteria
Sammanfattning : The focus of the thesis is on selection and adaptation processes in bacteria with emphasis on denitrifying bacteria in groundwater. Other nitrogen transformation processes such as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate ammonification) and nitrification of forest soil bacteria are briefly discussed. LÄS MER
5. Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and trace elements
Sammanfattning : The rapid urbanization and industrialization has led to an increase of disposal petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) and trace elements (TE) into the environment. These pollutants are considered as the most toxic contaminants in the world due to their persistence in the environment, and the long range of toxicological effects for living beings. LÄS MER
