21. Retinoid metabolism and signalling in vascular smooth muscle cells
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) play a major role in cardiovascular diseases. In advanced atherosclerosis, blood flow is impaired due to reduced luminal diameter. Percutaneous vascular interventions, including balloon angioplasty and stent-application are commonly used for the re-establishment of luminal size and improvement of tissue perfusion. LÄS MER
22. Ion channels and electrical activity in vascular smooth muscle: Effects of calcium store depletion, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the vessel wall contract to regulate blood flow and pressure, a function essential for normal circulation through tissues. On the other hand, migration and proliferation of SMCs are important factors in vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis following surgical dilatation. LÄS MER
23. Function of contractile and cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle: Effects of hypertrophy and age and desmin removal in a transgenic animal
Sammanfattning : In man, the urinary bladder responds to an urinary outflow obstruction with a pronounced dilatation and growth of the bladder wall. This clinical situation can be mimicked in rat by creation of a partial urinary outflow obstruction and the papers included in the present thesis use this animal model to address questions regarding the adaptive changes in the smooth muscle of the growing bladder. 24. Smooth muscle hypertrophy and the IGF-system
Sammanfattning : Insulin-like growth factor-! (IGF-I) has both metabolic and mitogenic effects on smooth muscle cells (SMCs). The effects of IGF-I are modified by a group of binding proteins (IGFBPs). The present study was devoted to smooth muscle hypertrophy and the IGF-system in smooth muscle under different conditions. 25. Regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase - Consequences in experimental models of bladder disease
Sammanfattning : Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is associated with various pathophysiological conditions in the lower urinary tract. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate the regulation of iNOS in bladder smooth muscle cells and the consequences on neuromuscular regulation, cell growth and differentiation. LÄS MER
