1. Polymer Gels: Modeling the Swelling Behavior
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with the swelling behavior of polyelectrolyte gels. The thesis can be divided into two parts. Part one deals with the modeling and computer simulation of the gel swelling. LÄS MER
2. Evolutionary Resolutions of Conflicts with Mates and Offspring
Sammanfattning : In sexual conflicts and conflicts between parents and offspring, natural selection acts in different directions on the two sides. For example, males may be selected to achieve many mates, but female fitness may be maximised by monogamy. In this thesis I study the evolutionary outcome of these situations mainly by theoretical modelling. LÄS MER
3. On cardiovascular responses to hypovolemic circulatory stress. An experimental study in man
Sammanfattning : Aged subjects have a decreased tolerance to hypovolemia, which could contribute to their increased cardiovascular morbidity. One possible etiological factor might be an age-related reduction in the efficiency of the baroreceptor reflex axis. LÄS MER
4. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 5. Metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita - dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history
Sammanfattning : This thesis starts with a review of different biodiversity assessment methods in forests and the rest deals with the metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened beetle living in hollow trees. I concentrate on the effect of dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history for the presence, population size and future survival of this species. LÄS MER
