    Sammanfattning : In two-spotted gobies (Gobiusculus flavescens), females develop an orange belly as they approach sexual maturity. Toward the end of the single breeding season, males become rare and females compete for spawnings. Nest-holding males then prefer females with more colourful bellies and this trait has been suggested to act as a female ornament. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Computational modelling is becoming an increasingly important tool in biological research. By performing computer simulations of models, it becomes possible to test theories about a biological system against experimental data.     Sammanfattning : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : I have investigated some of the biological regulatory mechanisms governing the development of crystalline lenses. I used fish as model animals because they possess optically interesting lenses, while the geometrical simplicity of fish lenses allows for studies that are difficult or impossible with the lenses of other animals.     Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO.
