  1. 1. Cardiovascular risk factors, diet and the metabolic syndrome

    Författare :Per Sjögren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The clustering of metabolic disturbances, referred to as the metabolic syndrome, is today at the centre of attention. The rationale for this focus is that the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is increasing globally with subsequent increased risk for cardiovascular complications. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Genetics of Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: From Genome Wide Linkage Scan and Candidate Genes to Genome Wide Association Studies

    Författare :Marketa Sjögren; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are major health problems associated with cardiovascular disease. Both diseases are influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this thesis was to identify genetic risk factors for T2D, particularly T2D associated with obesity, and for MetS. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Sjögren-Larsson syndrome in Sweden : an epidemiological, genetic, clinical and biochemical study

    Författare :Sten Jagell; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sjögren-Larsson syndrome; spastic diplegia; spastic tetraplegia; mental retardation; congenital ichthyosis; macular changes;

    Sammanfattning : The Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is a genetically determined syndrome with autosomal recessive inheritance originally and comprehensively described from Sweden. It is characterized by the three cardinal signs congenital ichthyosis, spastic di- or tetraplegia and mental retardation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Hypothyroidism caused by a mutant thyroid hormone receptor alpha1 : consequences for development and physiology

    Författare :Maria Sjögren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Lack of sufficient thyroid hormone during pregnancy and early postnatal development results in profound mental retardation and motor deficits whereas altered thyroid status in the adult is associated with disturbed metabolic homeostasis and impaired cardiac function. Thyroid hormone mediates its effects through the distinct thyroid hormone receptors (TR) TRalpha1 and TRbeta1-2, which are ligand-modulated transcription factors that regulate gene expression both in the presence and absence of hormone. 5. 5. Dietary Intake, Fatty Acid Biomarkers, and Abdominal Obesity : Population-Based Observational Studies

    Författare :Zayed Alsharari; Ulf Risérus; Matti Marklund; Per Sjögren; Tommy Cederholm; Emily Sonestedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :abdominal obesity; fatty acid biomarker; dietary intake; Kostvetenskap; Food; Nutrition and Dietetics;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the associations between fatty acid (FA) biomarkers, carbohydrate intake, and abdominal obesity (AO) and related anthropometric measures in a population-based cohort of men and women in Stockholm County. The overall hypothesis was that dietary fat quality assessed by serum and adipose tissue FA composition, and dietary intake of especially carbohydrates is associated with AO. LÄS MER
