1. Stem cells in the adult heart - 3D culture, isolation of side population cells and search for a stem cell niche
Sammanfattning : Cardiac tissue shows a poor regenerative capacity. From 2003 reports, mostly based on animal models, have showed existence of stem cells also in the heart. Using 14C measurements, a slow but steady turnover of the cardiac cells was shown in humans, around 1%/year. As a source for this regeneration endogenous stem cells have been suggested. LÄS MER
2. Living and dying with prostate cancer : Population-based register studies
Sammanfattning : Tailored treatment with adequate timing is essential for the quality of prostate cancer care at all stages. Overtreatment should be avoided due to the side effects, but undertreatment may on the other hand lead to progression and death. LÄS MER
3. Cardiovascular disease and hypertension : Population-based studies on self-rated health and health-related quality of life in Sweden
Sammanfattning : The aim with this thesis was to study cardiovascular disease and hypertension, use of drugs and health from an epidemiological perspective. Various methods - self-rated health (SRH), health related quality of life (HRQL) - the 36-item short form questionnaire (SF-36) - and health utility measurements - the rating scale (RS) and the time-trade off (TTO) methods - were employed. 4. Population Pharmacodynamic Modeling and Methods for D2-receptor Antagonists
Sammanfattning : Early predictions of a potential drug candidate’s time-course of effect and side-effects, based on models describing drug concentrations, drug effects and disease progression, would be valuable to make drug development more efficient. Pharmacodynamic modeling can incorporate and propagate prior knowledge and be used for simulations of different scenarios. LÄS MER
5. Identification and characterization of progenitor populations in the human adult heart
Sammanfattning : Traditionally, the heart has been regarded as a non-regenerative organ. During the last 10 years, this notion has been challenged. By 14C measurements, it was calculated that at the age of 50, about 45% of all cardiomyocytes had formed after birth. LÄS MER
