Through an analysis of the comic press, which was a crucial element in mass culture and political life, the author tries to demonstrate how the everyday version of a national Swedish identity was constructed in opposition to 'The Jew'. This dissertation investigates the images of Jews in a comprehensive selection of Latvian novels published between 1934–1944 in order to establish whether, and to what extent, the traditional images are subject to change under the pressure of modernity, nationalism and a rapidly changing political situation.
