1. Epidemiological studies in de novo and secondary acute leukemia
Sammanfattning : Abstract Background Acute leukemia (AL) is a rare blood cancer with poor prognosis in adult patients. Socioeconomic factors are known to impact cancer outcomes, but have not been adequately examined among adult AL patients. LÄS MER
2. Role of FLT3 in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Molecular mechanisms and Therapeutic opportunities
Sammanfattning : Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous blood disease which is characterized by different mutations and chromosomal rearrangements. Nearly 60% of genetic alterations have been found in AML patients involve in signaling pathways including signaling of tyrosine kinase receptor FLT3. LÄS MER
3. Characterization of secondary and therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia
Sammanfattning : Secondary acute myeloid leukemia (s-AML) refers to patients with either therapy-related AML (t-AML), that is, AML after treatment with chemo- and/or radiation for a prior disease, or AML progressing from an antecedent hematologic disorder (AHD-AML), typically a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or a myeloproliferative neoplasm. Patients with s-AML present with higher rates of adverse cytogenetic aberrations and higher frequencies of adverse mutations and, subsequently, respond worse to therapy, and have poorer outcome compared to de novo AML. 4. Prognostic markers in pediatric leukemia and mechanisms of KRAS induced leukemogenesis
Sammanfattning : Leukemia results from uncontrolled growth of genetically altered blood cells. Depending on the cell type of origin, the leukemia is defined as T-cell, B-cell, or myeloid and as acute or chronic depending on its characteristics. However, patients with a certain subtype of leukemia (e.g. LÄS MER
5. On mechanisms of drug resistance in acute myeloid leukemia
Sammanfattning : In this thesis focus has been to increase the knowledge and understanding of some of the mechanisms responsible for drug resistance in acute myeloid leukemia, as well as identify possibilities to predict drug resistance at diagnosis. We have studied the intracellular behavior of cytostatic drugs and their main metabolites (paper I) and the cellular response to cytostatic drugs (paper III).
