16. Manganese cycling in the Baltic Sea over the last ~8000 years: the influence of redox conditions on mineral formation and burial
Sammanfattning : The Baltic Sea is one of the largest brackish water bodies in the world and is suffering extensive environmental issues caused by eutrophication and warming climate. A halocline in the water column divides more saline bottom water fed by inflows through the narrow connection with the North Sea from the surface waters and inhibiting exchange of oxygen between the two water masses. 17. Ocean circulation in the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica
Sammanfattning : The increase of mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a significant contribution to global sea level rise. The most rapid changes are occurring in the Amundsen Sea area, where the thinning of the floating glaciers is assumed to be driven by the ocean. LÄS MER
18. Effects of warming on the green alga Cladophora glomerata : Ecological and genetic responses
Sammanfattning : Since the beginning of the 20th century, average global surface temperature has increased ~0.7 °C and the current scenarios predict that it will continue to rise additional 2-4 °C during the 21st century. LÄS MER
19. Mapping bathymetry : From measurement to applications
Sammanfattning : Surface elevation is likely the most fundamental property of our planet. In contrast to land topography, bathymetry, its underwater equivalent, remains uncertain in many parts of the World ocean. Bathymetry is relevant for a wide range of research topics and for a variety of societal needs. LÄS MER
20. Stability of the free-surface problem arising in ice-sheet- and glacier modeling : Numerical investigation and stabilization
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of two papers dealing with a stabilization method for free-surface flows. The method was initially developed to stabilize mantle-convection simulations, but is in this work extended to ice-sheet- and glacier modeling. LÄS MER
