1. Sutures bridging nerve defects
Sammanfattning : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 2. Nerve gap repair by the use of artificial conduits and cultured cells
Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with loss of nerve tissue and require autologous nerve grafts to provide a physical substrate for axonal growth. This thesis investigates the use of fibrin as both a tubular conduit to guide nerve regeneration and also as a matrix material to suspend various regenerative cell types within/on poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) nerve conduits. 3. Tendon autografts for bridging nerve defects
Sammanfattning : A new method, where a tendon segment – a tendon autograft – was used as graft material for peripheral nerve reconstruction, was developed. Defects, 10-15 mm long, in rat sciatic nerves were bridged by various modifications of tendons. LÄS MER
4. Neuroprotection and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury
Sammanfattning : Following microsurgical reconstruction of injured peripheral nerves, severed axons are able to undergo spontaneous regeneration. However, the functional result is always unsatisfactory with poor sensory recovery and reduced motor function. LÄS MER
5. Vibration-induced neuropathy in the hand
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to investigate clinical, pathophysiological and structural aspects of vibration-induced peripheral neuropathy since work with hand-held vibrating tools may lead to progressive neurological and vascular hand symptoms. Symptomatic vibration-exposed men were examined clinically and by neurography, tactilometry, and vibrometry and by measurement of temperature perception thresholds. LÄS MER
