It is advanced in the introduction that Houellebecq’s work could be read against the novelist’s 1997 suggestion that “if somebody today was able to craft a mode of expression that was at once honest and positive, they would change the world”.     Sammanfattning : The basis of this dissertation is a critical examination of the biographical and psychological perspective which has to date dominated work on Södergran and which explains Södergran's writings as a product of her distinctive personality and tragic circumstances. It is a view that is presented here as deceptive, enervating, and counterproductive to a deeper understanding of how her body of work relates to the development of verse during the twentieth century.     Sammanfattning : With an estimated 100 million copies of his works sold, Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) is still one of the most popular German authors worldwide. Taking Hesse’s position in the aesthetic debates from 1900-1927 as a starting point, this study examines the influence of art criticism, artistic crisis, and intermediality in Hesse’s novels Roßhalde (1914), Klingsor’s last summer (1919) and The Steppenwolf (1927).
