  1. 11. From behaviour to genes: anti-predator responses of brown trout (Salmo trutta) under winter conditions

    Författare :Karl Filipsson; Eva Bergman; Ann Erlandsson; Martin Österling; Johan Watz; Stefán Óli Steingrímsson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; burbot; climate change; cortisol; diel behaviour; gene expression; HPI axis; light; mRNA; piscivorous; poikilotherm; predator; salmonid; stream; stress; temperature; thermal; winter behaviour; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Temperature has major effects on the performance of poikilotherms. In encounters with predators, low winter temperatures constrain predator detection and escape capabilities in prey fishes. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Neuroendocrinology of agonostic interaction and social signalling in Artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) : Studies on the neuroendocrine regulation of aggressive behaviour, stress responses and skin colour

    Författare :Erik Höglund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Brain monoamines; social signalling; POMC; skin colour; stress; Salmonid; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Stress Coping Strategies in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

    Författare :Joachim Schjolden; Svante Winberg; Felicity Huntingford; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Salmonid fish; Stress coping; Serotonin; Cortisol; Catecholamines; Monoaminoxidase; Tryptophan; Monoamines; Behaviour; Stress; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Animals show a great variety in physiological and behavioural responses to stressors. These responses are often bimodally distributed within populations and show consistency on an individual level over time and across situations, which in terrestrial vertebrates have been identified as proactive and reactive stress coping strategies. 4. 14. Teleost reproduction: Aspects of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) oocyte growth and maturation

    Författare :Håkan Berg; Per-Erik Olsson; Birgitta Norberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoophysiology; Salmonid; oocyte growth; vitellogenin; vitelline envelope protein; stress; cortisol; oocyte maturation; membrane receptor; Zoofysiologi; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi; Zoophysiology; zoofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In all vertebrate species, reproduction is a hormonally controlled process, important for growth and maturation of gonads and germ cells. Production of functional germ cells is of outmost importance to secure the survival of a species. Fish comprises 50% of the known vertebrates and are found in aquatic habitats all over the world. 5. 15. Interspecific Interactions between Native Brown Trout and Invasive Brook Trout: Insights into Behaviour and Morphology

    Författare :Magnus L. Wallerius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Invasive species; Fish; Competition; Foraging; Management;

    Sammanfattning : The introduction of non-native species represents a global threat to ecosystems and biodiversity. In Europe, the introduction of the invasive brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) has led to species displacement and local extinction of native brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations. LÄS MER
