  1. 1. Dietary Intake, Fatty Acid Biomarkers, and Abdominal Obesity : Population-Based Observational Studies

    Författare :Zayed Alsharari; Ulf Risérus; Matti Marklund; Per Sjögren; Tommy Cederholm; Emily Sonestedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :abdominal obesity; fatty acid biomarker; dietary intake; Kostvetenskap; Food; Nutrition and Dietetics;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the associations between fatty acid (FA) biomarkers, carbohydrate intake, and abdominal obesity (AO) and related anthropometric measures in a population-based cohort of men and women in Stockholm County. The overall hypothesis was that dietary fat quality assessed by serum and adipose tissue FA composition, and dietary intake of especially carbohydrates is associated with AO. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Human body composition. Reference data and anthropometric equations. The metabolic syndrome and risk

    Författare :Ingrid Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :adults; anthropometry; atherosclerotic morbidity; body composition; body fat; cardiovascular disease; DEXA; dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; fat-free mass; FFM; humans; metabolic syndrome; morbidity; mortality; prediction equations; randomly selected sample; reference data; sagittal trunk diameter; TBK; total body potassium; waist circumference;

    Sammanfattning : The determination of body composition is a key to the understanding of the relation between obesity and disease. In order to evaluate body composition data, reference values are needed. Since methods with high validity and reproducibility are expensive and often time consuming, simpler techniques based on anthropometry are needed. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation

    Författare :Ulf Risérus; Keith Frayn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Metabolic syndrome; dietary fatty acids; conjugated linoleic acid; insulin resistance; oxidative stress; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; dyslipidemia; abdominal obesity; type 2 diabetes; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Determination of Human Body Composition. Methodological and Applied Studies

    Författare :John Brandberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :X-ray Computed Tomography; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Body Composition; Obesity; Metabolic Syndrome X; Glucose Metabolism; Growth Hormone; Fatty Liver; Intra-Abdominal Fat;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide important research opportunities due to their unique capability of characterizing and quantifying tissues and organs. Ionizing radiation is a limitation using CT, and recent developments aiming to improve MRI for determination of body composition have not been validated. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Risk factors in type 2 diabetes with emphasis on blood pressure, physical activity and serum vitamin D

    Författare :Pär E:son Jennersjö; Carl Johan Östgren; Fredrik Nyström; Toste Länne; Mai-Lis Hellénius; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : BackgroundType 2 diabetes is a common chronic disease with a two-fold increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and has an increasing prevalence worldwide. This thesis is based on a study conducted in primary health care in Östergötland and Jönköping, Sweden. LÄS MER
