  1. 1. Reproductive strategies and liming responses in forest field-layer flora

    Författare :Annika Kruuse af Verchou; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; species turnover; species richness; sexual reproduction; podzol; pH; Lamiastrum galeobdolon; forest liming; demography; Cambisol; clonal plants; SRE; vegetative reproduction; VRE; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Liming increased species richness, in accordance with the species pool hypothesis, and number of plants of individual species in beech forest field-layer vegetation, by increasing establishment by seedlings and vegetative offspring. Turnover rates also increased, suggesting the explanatory value of the carousel model. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies on the transcriptional regulation of sterol 12alpha-hydroxylase (CYP8B1)

    Författare :Yizeng Yang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Bile acids; CYP8B1; CYP7A1; transcription; nuclear receptor; PPAR-alpha; HNF4-alpha; FTF; SREBP; thyroid hormones.;

    Sammanfattning : The conversion of cholesterol into bile acids is mainly via two pathways, which are initiated by CYP7A1 and CYP27A1 respectedly. CYP8B1, a microsomal P450 cytochrome, hydroxylates of the steroid nucleus at the C-12alpha position to form 7alpha, 12alpha-dihydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one, a facultative precursor of CA. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on the regulatory role of cholic acid in cholesterol metabolism

    Författare :Charlotte Murphy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cholesterol is essential for normal growth and development in both man and mouse. However, excess cholesterol can be harmful leading to diseases such as atherosclerosis and gallstones. Once formed cholesterol cannot be catabolised by the body and must therefore be converted to other compounds for excretion. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Endotoxin-, glutamate- and drug-induced inflammation and cytotoxicity with emphasis on signal transduction mechanisms

    Författare :Ylva Edling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammatory cells such as monocytes and glial cells play an important role in the pathogenesis of ischemic- or drug-induced brain or liver injury. Excessive concentrations of glutamate is toxic to neural cells, and triggers a series of transcriptional events beginning with the expression of the immediate early genes like c-fos and c-jun, which in turn affect the expression of other genes necessary for the development of brain injury. 5. 5. Process intensification in mechanical pulping : Reduced process complexity and improved energy efficiency

    Författare :Christer Sandberg; Per Engstrand; Jan-Erik Berg; Göran Bengtsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Sammanfattning : This work shows that, for newsprint quality grades, the production processes for mechanical pulp can be simplified, and the specific electrical energy demand can be reduced with around 600 kWh/ton (30%). The purpose of the work is to demonstrate how the production cost for mechanical pulps can be decreased through increased energy efficiency and reduced number of unit operations. LÄS MER
