  1. 1. Morphological and Physiological Adaptations in Cichlid Crystalline Lenses

    Författare :Marcus Schartau; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SKF-38393; D1-agonist; optical properties 6-hydroxydopamine; optical measurements; organ culture; dopamine; teleost; lens circulation; Lens; SCH-23390; melatonin; multifocal optical system;

    Sammanfattning : Vertebrate eyes share a common ancestry as well as the basic design with a pupil, a retina and a lens. The lens is essential for perceiving the details in the world around us and ensures that a sharp image of the surroundings is focused onto the photoreceptors in the retina. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Effects of nicotine on mesolimbocortical dopaminergic neurotransmission : A pharmacological study in the rat

    Författare :Magnus Nisell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; nicotine; dopamine; ventral tegmental area; accumbens; prefrontal cortex; c-fos; drug-dependence; sensitization; mecamylamine; D; receptors; SCH 23390;

    Sammanfattning : Tobacco-smoking represents a form of drug addiction to nicotine (NlC) and thereinforcing and dependence-producing properties of NIC depend largely on centraldopamine (DA) neurons, located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projectingmainly to the nucleus accumbens (NAc; mesolimbic DA system) and the medial prefrontalcortex (PFC; mesocortical DA system). Generally, the mesolimbic DA system plays apivotal role in the reinforcing effects of natural rewards as well as of drugs ofabuse. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Food availability, physical activity and body weight : Role of dopamine, neuropeptide Y and orexin

    Författare :Ricard Nergårdh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decades our knowledge about neuroendocrine control of energy balance has increased tremendously. Numerous neuropeptides and hormones with pronounced effects on feeding and body weight have been identified and put into schemes as anorexic or orexigenic signals. LÄS MER

  4. 4. PET studies on the mechanisms of action of antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs

    Författare :Kai-Chun Yang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a non-invasive molecular imaging technique suitable for examination of neurochemical biomarkers in the living brain. Among these applications, PET studies are used to facilitate the development of novel psychotropic drugs. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Novel mechanism of action of antipsychotic drugs : Effects on neuropeptides in rat brain

    Författare :Susanne H M Gruber; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Schizophrenia; D-amphetamine; Antipsychotic drugs; Neurotensin; Neuropeptide Y; Rat brain; Microdialysis;

    Sammanfattning : Schizophrenic patients have been reported to have lower concentrations of neurotensin (NT)-like immunoreactivity (-LI) in their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that normalize after treatment with antipsychotic drugs. Schizophrenic patients also had higher CSF concentrations of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-LI compared to controls, thus involvement of NPY in the disease has also been suggested. LÄS MER
